Wonderful evening. Relaxing and welcoming atmosphere for trans-identifying people to explore ideas through performances of music, poetry, spoken word and comedy. A thoroughly uplifting and entertaining evening

Really enjoyed the night..was a tad unsteady when we arrived...been a long day! But it was great fun. Well done Vanessa..great hostess.
Played a few songs myself and everyone was very gracious..thank you

this was another in a series of manchester concord open mic events that i have participated in over the last 18 months or so, but the first held at their new meeting place of polari (underneath via on canal street). and it has to be said that the venue is far more suited to that purpose than the previous one villaggios ever was - not only is there a stage, but also no dumb waiter (as in one of those lifts you put food in) right in the middle of the room getting in the way!

perhaps because of that, the turnout was the best i have seen for these events. and there was no shortage of those wanting to get up and take a turn either. there were a few problems with the equipment (it got excessively loud at times, although i suppose at least that drowned out the thumping noise from upstairs that became noticeable later on), but hopefully those responsible will get the gremlins sorted out at any future events? but overall it was well-worth it, and it appears as a result open mics or similar performance events might now happen on a far more frequent basis then they ever did at villagios.

this was my first visit to the new venue, so i don't know what it's been like on non-event nights since they moved there a couple of months or so back. but it was noticeable that few if any of the "old guard" clique that used to just sit around and yack with each other rather than take an interest in any entertainment provided were there - which is no bad thing in my book!

it also has to be noted that unlike before there is now no entry charge in normal circumstances, which i presume might make a difference to those considering attending in the future? anyway, here's hoping that as a result of the changes (even if they were forced rather than planned!), the manchester concord has a new lease of life?

i've been attending (and performing at) these manchester concord open mic events for the last year or so since they were started up by club member vanessa. however despite her valiant efforts there is still some apathy if not resistance towards it in some quarters, and i felt the somewhat lacklustre feel of this week's event reflected that.

in my opinion, if this is going to continue on a regular basis or even at all, then there needs to be a bit more enthusiasm and attention from those present for others who do make the effort to perform. and if new blood comes in for the express purpose of being entertained or maybe even getting involved (as opposed to just sitting around nattering with their mates), then i think it will make a big difference.

you don't have to be a member of the club in order to attend the open mic evenings - you can do so a guest, and that means paying only £1.50 more on the door than if you were a member. so it's hardly breaking the bank, and may act as an incentive to come to what will hopefully be the next one?

for those interested, details of upcoming events are on the club's website:

http://www.manchesterconcord.org.uk/coming-events

just a couple of points to end on:

1 - remember that the audience is as important if not more-so than the performers at events like these, and if you appreciate their efforts then they will appreciate your enthusiasm in return

2 - as they say: "use it or lose it"!
