First time at Sparkle and didn't know what to expect. Had little experience of living as a trans person 24/7 but would suggest that this event is an ideal place to give it a go. The Mancunians are very experienced at seeing transgendered people and even the children don't bother with you. The weather conditions were very hot which made wigs very difficult to wear. I ended up just using my own hair during the day and wearing a wig at night. I also went on my own. It's worth noting that most people seem to be in groups and whilst most people will chat to you there are long periods where you may be on your own in a crowd, which can be quite lonely. If you are going on your own, I would suggest that you plan the trip well and take part in workshops and other events to get chatting to as many people as possible as this will give you the best chance of making new friends.

Thanks to the weather and the fantastic turn out, I thought this was my best ever Sparkle. Its difficult to leave meaningful star ratings for this huge event in public gardens in the Canal St area of Manchester. The area is generally very friendly, if very noisy and lively. All the bars and clubs I frequented were very t girl friendly and nightlife goes on ALL night. Friday night is the warm up night with meet-up events held in the evening and then all the pubs and clubs to try out.

Breakfast at Velvet because Via turned us away despite advertising a breakfast on their own and SParkle websites.
Wish I had tried Taurus because the Velvet breakfast was cold and no black sausage.

party in the pArk event very good though far fewer stall/trader/info attendance than last year.

Weather fantastic though Sparkle did not arrange that.

evening meal at Politi I think its called in basement of via, staff excellent and food very good as well.

I have been looking for work in the area as I would really like to be able to access Canal st more easily.

Everyone should go.

The chinese meal was a complete rip off, The advertised price at the venue was 9.50 but Sparkle attendees were asked to pay £16. When i asked to pay the door price I was refused and told (lied too) that it was the price for a restaurant next door.

The Canal Street clubs were great as usual, accepting and helpfull staff, lots of atmosphere and great just to be out.

Sparkle for me on Friday was:

arriving just after the welcome desk opened to get a welcome pack, a wander round the city finding the venues, and getting dressed for the evening, before going out to a cocktail evening at Via and the LGBT Rock night at Club Retro.

The Welcome desk was useful and well staffed, and easily found by the dozens and dozens of girls outside round tables drinking and chatting in their small groups. It could possible have used someone to ask new girls (like me) the occasional question like "are you on your own, do you know anyone here?" but I'm not sure how this could be done.

Manchester is not normally baking hot, but even so it's a stroll from the cluster of venues within a hundred meters of the canal, to the shopping district up the hill. Hardly their fault.

Cocktails at Via was nice, good venue which benefits from several split levels, for private nooks and tables, quieter corners, and cool basement bars. All still rather noisy (loud music), but underpopulated early in the evening. Credit to their unisex toilets.

I think I'm one of these girls who turns up early to find herself the first one there :p

Club Retro, once it got going, was quite fun. Goths and TGs and rockers all bouncing around and occasionally stamping on balloons. I had a good time, friendly staff and reasonable drinks, and rocked out (to the appropriately loud music) till about 1am.

Sparkle on Saturday for me:

Workshops, discussions and consultations at the Lesbian&Gay Foundation in the morning, Sparkle in the Park in the afternoon, and a somewhat vague bar crawl in the evening.

The LGF were friendly and accomadating, shame it was the hottest day of the year. Sparkle in the Park was smaller than I thought, but still quite fun. Loadsa girls, some good musci, several interesting shopping opportunities. I didn't try the food/drink on site, having brought picnic supplies. Not having found any friends for the evening, I wandered through most of the bars/clubs in the Village, and found them all friendly, accomadating, LOUD, and packed. It was interesting, but I'm not much for getting drunk alone, and so headed to bed after midnight.

An absolutely brilliant event, a great show on stage in the park. Superb bars on Canal Street and the surrounding streets. Plenty of good restaurants nearby. Sparkle is an event not to be missed.

I had a brilliant time and can't wait for next year. The weather was superb, perhaps even a little too hot!! had quite an adventure late Saturday night/Sunday morning. Due to a fire I could not get into my hotel so had to spend the time in mainstream Manchester in a dress with total vanillas!!!
