Teds has become my favourite place. It's all about the people and while other venues will have more sparkle and glitz, they lack the relaxed, laid back atmosphere that i find so appealing at Teds. First impressions will be underwhelming - it is a basement bar behind a hard to find doorway on North End Road, identified only by a sign that seems to indicate stuffed bears sold within, and by day looks like a carpet shop (the neighbour's wares propped against Ted's windows). It helps. at night, that customers like me yet to give up smoking can be seen lurking, fag in hand (read how you like) and that is maybe the best way to be sure you have found the right place. Entry, through the black door and a buzzer, usually opened instantly for the nervous by Terry (great guy - top bloke) - who is there to protect you from the occasional idiot outside. Dingy foyer, £4 to get in, 50p to hang a coat, down the stairs - negotiable by even the most drunk stilletoed totterer (and amusing to watch unless you are a paranoid medic), then you are in the basement which is perhaps 70ft long and 18 wide (says the property guy by dead reckoning), with the bar to your left and the dance floor and loos to your right. Who is there? In a Star Wars bar sort of way, you could find anyone and everyone, from the super-tall (+ heels) amazon, through all kinds of girl of both sexes to, at the bottom end, guys like me who are unsure, standing and watching. Sometimes it is quiet with perhaps 20 in but as often as not, by midnight there can be 50, 60, dunno - can get quite busy. To the outsider admirer - I still am one I suppose - it can seem that most people know eachother and it is more of regular meeting place than much else - and this can maybe leave the more nervous just standing there - but that's up to you. the gregarious will do as they always do and chat up the girls..... or guys - its that kind of place. Sometimes outrageous with public displays of 'affection', and, if you are desperate for a pee, private goings on, allegedly, behind a locked door... Unlike Wayout - which for me has become very dull and identical and a bit of an asian takeaway, Teds is more chat, less noise. many of the same people, maybe a slightly older crowd (maybe mid 20s upwards). escorts - yes, sometimes quite a few but everyone is entitled to a night off and a night out so no reason for people to avoid it for that. on the contrary, fun to chat with some of those girls as humans not as a customer. Like Wayout, however, you can be what ever you want to be. Girls come in all shapes and sizes and clothes, from 7ft divas to 5ft filipina, bad girls looking for a fumble in the bogs at the back, nice girls just there for a drink and a chat. Men - the gropers and the hopers, the wallflowers (me) and the irrepressible latin lovers... though usually guys are dressed - well - as you are now - of course the girls seem to make alll the effort! Ages - everything legal you can think of. Mainly, though, it is a bar, run by Ted and his staff - great prices, very friendly, with some fabulous and exotic people to watch, chat to and... welll i never give up hope ... ms right is there for me somewhere!! Thursdays..and sundays but havent been on a sunday - 9ish onwards til late, otherwise it is a gay bar on other days. First timers?? Not sure if you should go??? just go, and go a few times to get the measure of the place.. don't be put off by a quiet night and don't be put off by the understated decor - it's about the customers, the characters... it's a people place. |
