Hi all you newbie TV/CDs and maybe no so newbies. I often get ask about makeup so here goes with what I consider the most important part of your makeup and getting it right. I hope this will be of help to some of you.
Preparation and Getting your Foundation Makeup Right
Think of your foundation and face as the artists canvas. We need a plain, consistent canvas on which to work and IMO the most important part of our makeup is the correct choice of foundation, preparation and then applying it correctly. Get that wrong and we are on a looser with our makeup before we have hardly begun.
Start your preparation by having a good facial wash followed by an application of a pore cleansing solution to get rid of dead skin and skin oils.
The second preparation to do before putting your foundation on is to ensure you have 2 really close wet shaves. Nothing IMO beats the closeness you get from a wet razor and the weapon of choice for me is a Gillette Mac 3 with the vibrating blades thingy. I suggest you apply a shaving oil first then a good quality shaving gel not foam to shave with.
The oil helps the blades glide over the surface of the skin. The second shave is to catch any areas of stubble you may have missed on the first shave. Pull you facial skin to make it taunt this will allow the blades to get closer to your skin to shave stubble better. Be sure to pay particular attention to the area under the nose and chin especially reaching almost into the nostrils and side of the mouth.
We haven’t done yet with the preparation.
Next comes a thing called a "Silkymit". This is aimed at women who have a dark area of facial hair between the nose and lips. Quite simply it’s a small rubber pad that you attaché self adhesive, very fine what can only be described as sanding strips. You rub the top lip area with the applicator in a circular motion. What you are in effect doing is taking this area to another lower level to reduce further stubble beard. The cost of a Slikimit is less than £2 and you get 4 strips to use with it. Boots sell them and other stores such as the Body Care and Super Drug etc.
Lots have been said about the choice and use of foundation makeup. There are lots of brands of makeup all vying for your money. Various foundations are available designed to cover everything from a simple shiny face to tattoos. One of the most widely used foundation is Dermablend there are many others but most of these are thick heavy foundations and are designed to cover things like port wine stains and heavy colour disfigurements.
I have used a number of these foundations Inc Dermablend but have found them to be too heavy and a bit OTT for me. IMO I believe these foundation to be over heavy for most of us and our needs. Some time ago my girlfriend discovered a new product on the market that wasn’t so heavy and it seemed to be aimed at ladies with irregular skin colour/blemishes. The name of this foundation is Couvrance a who are a French cosmetics manufacturer aimed at women with skin blemishes.
The only down side is it appears to be that it is only available in the larger stores of Boots and not even in them all unfortunately. I IMO this foundation is just what the average T/girl requires as a beard cover and to cover the muzzle area of the face in particular. The mussel area I will define as under the nose, down the side of the mouth and round to the chin. Take a look at Homer Simpson’s face to see what I mean.
If you wish to try Couvrance then I would suggest you seek out the boots trained skin care assistant. She will colour match your skin to the right shade of foundation. If you can’t do this then you will have to try and choose the right colour match yourself. There are 2 types of foundation however and I suggest you go for the oil free one… The costs is about £13 and it comes in a small compact together with a handy mirror and its own sponge. I would expect you to get 6 or 7 applications out of it.
I have my own way of applying this foundation. For the first application I start with the nose then onto muzzle area sweeping it into the crease of the nose, around the lips and chin then working outwards from there, I smooth it in. I let this dry for a short while before covering the muzzle area with a reddish, cream blusher. I do this by using my finger to dab it over the muzzle area. The reason for applying a reddish blusher is that red masks the darkness of the beard growth beneath.
I then apply a second coat of foundation to the muzzle area this time by dabbing the foundation on rather than smoothing it on. From this area I work out dabbing a little foundation to the cheeks, neck, forehead and nose paying particular attention to the area I had covered with the blusher until all traces had disappeared under the second coat of foundation.
Final, use a good magnifying mirror to check we have not missed any areas and that our foundation is consistent with no sign of the red blusher or the beard area beneath visible in the mirror. You are now ready to continue with the rest of your makeup. A good internet site for makeup hints and tips is Max Factors, here.
