Description:
When you feel confident enough to leave the Village area then Manchester's Northern Quarter (NQ) is a young, lively, liberal and trendy location to go and test your confidence. It is just a 10-minute walk from the village on the East side of Piccadilly.

You will find a trendy neighbourhood with vibrant street art, countless small and bohemian bars, countless innovative and buzzy cafes and restaurants and some of the city’s liveliest small music venues which host up-and-coming indie bands and established acts.

NQ came into being in the early 1990’s when a group of likeminded people felt that the city needed a space where independent ventures could offer shopping experiences, entertainment, food and drink.

The Northern Quarter’s borders fluctuate a little but it is generally accepted that they are Great Ancoats Street, Piccadilly, the Rochdale Canal and Shudehill.

Consisting mostly of red brick Victorian buildings that were associated with the rag trade they were ideal to be developed into unique and trendy bars, cafes, entertainment and shopping units. Many of the venues celebrate the areas history by incorporating exposed original brickwork, iron columns and girders as part of their design and infrastructure.

The NQ streets and buildings even attract film makers from Hollywood, Pinewood and TV production companies. Marvels ‘Captain America’ used Dale Street as a New York District and Guy Richie’s ‘Sherlock’ movies found ‘Old London town’ in the local alleys and pathways.

You will find all of the businesses and people in NQ to be welcoming and Trans/non-binary friendly. They will just treat you like any other customer or visitor.

A good way to enter Northern Quarter is from the Village area is to use Portland Street, just keep walking East along Portland Street until it becomes Newton Street. The corner of Newton Street and Dale Street puts you in the heart or Northern Quarter. If you need a post code to find it use M1 1HF
