We organised the Pink Panther night at Wharf Chambers last Saturday so my review is bound to be a bit biased. Me and a friend from Chix decided some time ago, that because we were on the beginning of our transformation and were both involved in music, that we could run a night in support of the trans community in Leeds. It wasn't without difficulties, mainly due to the fact that a couple of bands weren't able to play, and also that even though we knew a number of trans musicians in the area, they didn't feel able to come out and play in trans mode which was a real shame. Anyhow, we got the support of Wharf Chambers, a brilliant venue and co-operative, who gave us the use of the venue and engineer for free, and also got a line up deserving of playing on the night. We also got TransLeeds and Yorkshire Mesmac involved to run stalls. I felt that it was a great night and went well, although we could have done with a bigger crowd. However, we got a really good mix of people - trans and non trans, which was the idea. Breaking down barriers, giving people a friendly space to come out whilst having a good time listening to some great music is what it was all about. The acts themselves were great, and was an eclectic mix from celtic folk to electro synthpop and everything in between! Gloria Jeffries, a local musician and well known in the area started the night off playing folk and using loop pedals. Marie Fox, played her Neil Diamond set but for the first time in a frock! The Vanity Project followed, a creatively put together duo, winners of The Independent student band competition mixing up genres, technically savvy and political too. Stone Tape Theory featuring Piper Dawes on vocals and previously in ska band Wobbly Bob, rocked the house and she provided heartfelt words of encouragement to those coming out and what it is to be trans. Valentich, a solo producer, finished the night off with a first live outing playing electro synthpop to get everyone on the dancefloor. The whole evening was conducted by the amazing Jaimie Peute, interviewing the acts and tealling a whole series of stories and tales - some of which I couldn't repeat here!! All this and a raffle to raise further funds for the excellent TransLeeds. Talking to people, it seems that the experience may have changed some lives for the better, given them confidence to be themselves and hopefully lay a platform for the future. Hopefully we'll do another one soon!! |
