Description:
This is the world famous Watercress Line which runs preserved steam and diesel trains between Alton Station ( connected to the national rail system ) and Alresford Station. About 8 miles of single track with passing loops which enables trains to run in either direction at the same time using a rare tablet system.Open to the general public, train timetables and rosters are available on the website or look on the events list for specific times.
Easy parking at both stations and with a depot at Ropley.
No changing facilities but ample opportunity to eat at cafés and frequently in a buffet car on the train.
Ideal as a day out dressed but remember that this is a busy public venue with families in attendance so maximum decorum.
Frequent special events, details on the website.

Another really nice day at Ropley helping to operate the signal box there. We purchased food from the shops at Medstead/Four Marks in the form of two takeaway sandwiches which benefited greatly from being very high quality ingredients and not the usual freezing cold offering. The train was generally well patronised, the driver turned out to be a friend from another website who knew I dressed anyway and a successful token exchange at speed (10 mph ) was cheered by the engine crew. Good day out with endless free tea. Loved it |

A truly wonderful experience piloting 100 tons of two coach diesel electric unit along the miles of the Watercress Line in Hampshire. Afterwards and in the continuing company of one of my t girl acquaintances and my good friend Victor plus the addition of Elizabeth, we decamped to The Bell for drinks, dinner with wine and more drinks. Just as well three of us were staying in local hotels. The train I drove was 60 years old so I had the dubious privelege of being older than it. Awesome noise, fine control of speed and smooth ride and a loud and useful horn set. Great day and highly recommended. |

Spent an enjoyable day out with a group of girls and guys on the Watercress Line out in deepest Hampshire. A safe and relaxed opportunity to be en femme and just to take in the ambience. |

This was by far the best gettogether so far. Attendance was six people and the range of experience was wide and diverse. A second public railway outing for Olivia was a joy to see her gently push her own margins. I myself had the joy of 'coming out' to an old school chum and then promptly being introduced to the operations manager who just happened to be driving a Black 5. There will be more of these railway visits as each one has a near unique flavour and ambience although I suspect that the Mid Hants will remain favourite as it is closer to my home and has a busy schedule and some interesting motive power. A great day out and a great way to become used to the general public. |
