China town has a baffling array of quality and varied restaurants, this one is authentic, Chinese family-owned and has a varied and tasty Cantonese-style menu. They have a lot of regular Chinese customers which is always a good sign. The décor and atmosphere is “Hong Kong style canteen”. Prices are reasonable and food quality is good. This restaurant is popular so it is mostly always full. They won’t take bookings, it is walk-ins only and it is best to come early if you want to avoid queuing outside for a little while to get in at busy times. Staff are always friendly, efficient and fast to take orders, they will serve your order quickly and be attentive when you need them.

Just off the west of St Peters Square and about a 9 minute walk from the village area in sensible shoes. The menu is typical pub food at pub prices that are very reasonable for the city centre, weekdays there is a £6 offer on some limited main courses, drinks are usual chain pub choices but at fair prices. They can sometimes be short staffed but the staff working are always hard working, efficient and kind. The atmosphere is usually calm and much quieter than most city centre bars where entitled and rude people often feel the need to scream conversations at each other across their table.

For those of you with a bit of cash to flash or who wants to impress their partner then Winsome run by chef Shaun Moffat is a tad pricey but elegant and serves innovative, really well cooked and presented, plentiful, modern British cooking. Winsome gives the kind of quality and modernity you expect in Ancoats or Spinningfields without the walk from the Village as it is just across the road from Canal Street. It has playful touches too, such as dino egg cups, cow-shaped gravy boats and school dinner puddings all served in an attractive room with a large open kitchen down one side. Tables are large and well-spaced, hospitality is welcoming and friendly.

This bar so falls into the don’t judge a book by its cover category as at first impression its unpretentious rock image and rock loving customers can make you feel it might not be diversity friendly. In reality both the staff and the customers, who are mostly rock loving students, are friendly and inclusive of everyone so you can feel very safe and welcome here as a gender diverse person.
